Water Quality & Quantity
Water quantity is protected by Washington’s water-right permit system that regulates surface withdrawals and non-exempt groundwater withdrawals. Permit exemptions for homeowners for up to 5,000 gallons per day are seldom enforced. The Critical Areas Ordinance designates major sources of groundwater aquifers. In 2000, MVCC initiated a landmark study of the impact of irrigation on groundwater levels, which was completed by the US Geological Survey: the Methow Valley Groundwater Study.
Water quality is regulated by state and federal laws such as the Clean Water Act and by state and county laws restricting building within wetlands or floodplains. In 2012, MVCC appealed a Septage application permit over the old Twisp landfill, resulting in well testing at local wells.
