Support MVCC’s Alternative Four: Vote for the future we want to see

Scoping Comments are in, and the community’s voice was clear.
The county received over 70 comments reflecting the values citizens want to see analyzed in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and protected in the Comprehensive Plan (Comp Plan). Not surprisingly, we all share the same values!

With a future that is likely to include increased development pressure on our watershed’s limited surface and ground water supplies, along with predictions for more and larger wildfires, these two issues were at the top of most everyone’s list.

Other issues of concern included the impacts of Comp Plan alternatives on wildlife habitat and migration corridors, critical areas, agriculture and small farms, air quality, and rural aesthetics.

Over 22% of comments mentioned support for MVCC’s proposed Alternative Four — which was created to reflect and protect the values we share.

What’s Next?

The county is analyzing comments in preparation for the EIS, which will evaluate potential impacts of three Comp Plan alternatives on the values identified during scoping.

MVCC believes that the three alternatives provided by the county do not adequately address the issues raised by the community.

For example, The Department of Ecology’s comment letter points out that “…the County’s Draft Comprehensive Plan does not adequately discuss protection of and impacts to groundwater and surface water supply.”

In contrast, MVCC’s Alternative Four addresses water quantity and quality by promoting measures to harmonize watershed and land use planning, ensure legal and physical water availability, and protect instream flows and senior water rights holders.

We propose analyzing Alternative 4 in the EIS to be sure that these and other critical needs are addressed — and we need your help!

The county has hinted at willingness to include Alternative Four in the EIS, but a strong showing of public support will help bolster the decision from the ground up.
